Semiconductor Innovation in an Investment Constrained Economy
Updated: 2012-10-31 19:23:18
The current innovation climate in the semiconductor industry is alive and well but entrepreneurs have to adjust to the realities of the current economic situation and investment trends. The world's governmental economic development agencies have always looked at Silicon Valley with envy and paid big money to try to find the key which would unlock the secrets

The analogue industry is at an inflection point, says Tunc Doluca, CEO of Maxim Integrated. It is consolidating, it is increasingly focussed on mobility and it is heading towards higher levels of integration. "Originally the analogue industry was dominated by building blocks," says Doluca, "now we can help a customer build a system. The old single-function building block industry is going. Companies which can build highly integrated solutions can benefit." View the full article HERE

Texas Instruments recently stated that it intends to de-emphasize application processors for smartphones and tablets, and instead refocus its OMAP processors on embedded applications. And Qualcomm, which has been very successful lately in smartphone and tablet application processors, is dipping its toe in the embedded space as well. These are very interesting developments to me, because for some time I've been thinking about the role of mobile application processors in embedded applications.View the full article HERE
Intel announced its quarterly results a couple of days ago. They had previously downgraded 3rd quarter sales estimates but they managed to beat the downgraded numbers. If you look at the transcript of the call (I didn't listen live) you'll see very little mention of mobile and Atom. This is bad news for Intel. Its core business is the PC and the PC business is going nowhere. Not going away but it is not going to be the catalyst for future growth.View the full article HERE
